Samsung Galaxy S9 gets RCS messaging support with July security update

Google and Samsung have been working closely to bring RCS messaging support to many Galaxy devices. Rich Communication Services, if implemented well, should soon replace traditional SMS/MMS services.

A couple of months ago, we also reported that Google brought RCS support to its messaging application in India. And just a few days ago, the Galaxy A70 got support for the feature in the US. Thus, it seems Samsung is dedicated to enable RCS on all eligible phones soon.

Speaking of which, Galaxy S9 units in Germany have now bagged support for RCS. Previously, the function was brought to S9 and S9+ units via carriers like Verizon in the US. It was enabled after the device received the July security update.

Further, a Redditor also confirmed that the Galaxy S9 in Germany has indeed received RCS messaging support. The user posted a screenshot of the function after it was enabled.

For the uninitiated, RCS or Rich Communication Services allows users to send and receive messages in a similar (not the same) manner to chat-apps such as iMessage. Users can share their locations, gifs, stickers and more. Of course, this is just the crux of it and a quick Google search should get you more details.

Nonetheless, as Galaxy S9 users in Germany have now received support for the feature, we can expect it to roll out in other regions too. Further, we could soon see more devices receiving support for RCS in the following weeks and months.
